The BD workshop is designed to provide an integrated understanding of the knowledge and skills required for the safe and effective insertion of peripheral vascular access devices. The opening session will discuss anatomy; function of the vein related to peripheral vascular access including, criteria for vein selection, vein location and strategies to optimize vessel health.
The attendees will then be divided into 2 pre-selected groups (as per registration) for a 2 hour hands-on lab workshop.
Group 1: Vascular Access Management: An Integrated Approach to Peripheral Vascular Access Care
This lab for novice to competent clinicians offers a hands on opportunity to practice IV insertion demonstrating vein assessment, PIV insertion techniques and tricks of the trade, to support insertion success and IV longevity. 90% of hospital inpatients receive an VAD, yet 35-50%1 of those IVs fail. These outcomes are unacceptable to the clinician, the organization and, most importantly, the patient. PIV restarts may not only painful and frightening to the patient, but can lead to complications affecting patient outcomes. This interactive skills lab aligns with the INS and OHSA standards and guidelines. Vein assessment and insertions will be performed on anatomical models with the support of skilled clinicians.
Group 2: Ultrasound Guided Peripheral IV insertion
“Line It Up: Accept Only High Success Rates of Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation Using Ultrasound Guidance”. This interactive lab will provide clinicians with IV skills, an opportunity develop or improve ultra-sounded guided peripheral IV insertion. Patients with difficult venous access, pediatrics and older adult population will benefit from this visualization technology supported by the INS guidelines, to support insertion success. This workshop will assist (support) you with accessing optimal peripheral veins while learning helpful visualization and cannulation techniques. Participants will have time to practice U/S guided catheter insertion with the support of skilled professionals, offering guidance and support.
Objectives
The attendees will:
1. Identify and select appropriate veins for venipuncture
2. List strategies that can improve vasculature and successful insertion.
3. Attendees in group 1: Perform pre-insertion assessment and demonstrate PIV insertion skills
4. Attendees in group 2: Demonstrate how ultrasound guidance can improve the success rate IV insertion.
